Flagging

  • Thickness and Colorations

Our flagging typically ranges between 2 and 5 inches and has a silver gray color with Bronze and Iron accents. The color and thickness can vary depending on where we are quarrying, but extreme outliers are rare and selected out of normal inventory.

  • Lead Times

Lead time can vary widely based on which category you require for your project. During the early and peak part of the season you should always call to confirm availability. As a general rule of thumb you should consider the following: 3-5 SF can be available in one to two weeks. 6 - 9 SF and 10 -14 SF can have lead times of three to five weeks. 15 - 24 SF and 25 - 49 SF usually have lead times from six to ten weeks. 50+ SF flagging may be sold out within the first few weeks of the season.

  • Sizes

We break our flagging down into 6 size categories based on a pieces square footage. Those categories are: 3-5, 6-9, 10-14, 15-24, 25-49, and 50+

Bulk Wall Stone

  • Bulk wall is our common grade wall stone. These pieces range widely in size and can be up to 8 or 9 inches thick. It is not uncommon for some pieces to require two people to move. This option is excellent for your retaining walls or large wall projects. Frequently masons will mix bulk wall with palletized to get a more balanced mix of sizes. We sell bulk wall by the ton and one ton makes approximately 12 face feet of wall.

  • Bulk wall is almost always available. In the first month or so of the season we may have a 2 to 3 week lead time, but during the rest of the season we can deliver within a week or better.

  • For full deliveries of 18 - 24 tons we send out triaxle loads on Thursdays via Canepari Landscaping. For loads of 10 - 15 tons we ship via our tandem axle dump truck and we schedule those as needed. For loads in the 5 - 10 ton range we utilize JMT services to deliver. Lastly, for loads less than 5 tons we utilize smaller local carriers.

  • During processing we make sure to select and set aside pieces of stone that are 1.5 inches thick or less. These pieces are great for chinking and leveling walls.

Palletized Wall Stone

  • Palletized wall is more like our fine grade of wall stone. Each piece is hand selected and stacked to ensure high standards for quality. This option is optimal for projects with double sided walls, smaller subtle walls, or at jobsites where the ability to move small quantities of stone around is advantageous. Each pallet weighs 1.5 tons (3000 lbs) and makes approximately 18 face feet of wall.

  • Typically we are able to keep a stable inventory of palletized wall stone on hand. However, in the early parts of the season we can see lead times between 2 and 3 weeks.

  • There are several delivery options and the best typically depends on the constraints at the site and the size of the order. For large orders it is best to take delivery via a flatbed and have a forklift on site. We also have a flatbed and Moffett option that allows us to deliver up to 12 pallets at a time and does not require a forklift to be on site.

  • Snapped wall is a great option for customers looking for that modern or contemporary look. You get clean snapped faces with that dark gray color and tight joints. This is often matched with our snapped veneer for projects that incorporate dry stacked walls and veneered walls.

Chunky Wall Stone

  • Chunky wall stone are pieces of stone that require equipment to efficiently lift and move. These piece are typically a minimum of 8 inches thick and can get as thick as 18 inches. They can reach up to 4 or five feet in length and at least a foot in width. Chunky wall is perfect for large walls that need to be able to withstand some extreme conditions. This is also sold by the ton and it is difficult to say exactly how much coverage you get.

  • Typically we have chunky wall in stock, but there are times where demand peaks. In most cases, a week is about how long it would take to get a truckload on site.

  • These stones are quite large and cumbersome. The typical delivery method is via dump truck.

Steps and Landings

  • Natural Steps and Landings are one of the most sought after products we generate. Each step has a natural step face and nice step surface. Like the flagging, color is typically a silvery gray with iron and bronze water marks.

  • The best option for steps and landings is to pick them up. There are limited economic delivery options for smaller orders of steps. If the order is larger we can have the steps delivered via flatbed but there will need to be a forklift on site to unload.

  • Sizes vary considerably for the steps and landings, and price is calculated off the square footage of the piece. First we divide steps into two categories: standard steps, which are any step under 5 inches in thickness, and thick steps which are over 5 inches thick. The categories are then broken down by length and are as follows: 4 foot and under, 4 to 5 foot, 5 to 8 foot, 8 to 11 foot, and anything over 11 feet long.

  • Lead times are difficult to estimate reliably. It is always best to call well in advance to discuss your project.

Mosaic Thin Veneer

  • Mosaic thin veneer is designed to fit together on your application surface much in the same way flagging is fit together in a patio installation. This product requires an especially deft eye and skilled hand to make for a nice finished product. We sell the mosaic by the square foot and it is palletized.

  • This veneer is cut to 1.5 inches thick and each piece varies considerably in all other measurements. No one piece will have a point to point measurement greater than 24 inches.

  • We do not keep much mosaic veneer in inventory so please be sure to place an order will in advance.

  • We do not supply corners for the mosaic veneer. Corners need to be made by the installer. It is recommended that corners are made by miter cutting a larger piece down the middle to maintain continuity of size for your corners.

Ledge Veneer (Sel. A)

  • Thin stone veneer is becoming an ever more popular way to incorporate stone into projects. It is a lightweight solution and has a full range of colors that reflect the same tones and textures of the exterior elements of a project. Selection A is the premier selection of pieces with larger faces. This veneer is sold by the square foot and is palletized.

  • The selection A. is cut to 1.5 inches thick and is comprised of pieces that are over 4 inches tall and lengths of at least 8 inches.

  • Thin veneer is usually in stock for smaller quantity orders (200 SF or less). Larger orders should be called in well in advance of the project.

  • For Ledge Veneer we offer cut corners. These are priced by the linear foot and always require an advanced order as they are most difficult to produce. It is important to note that manufactured corners always have at least one dark gray face, and often have two. These should not solely make up your corners. It is recommended you mix the corner pieces in with butt-joint ledge pieces for your corners to achieve a cohesive look.

Ledge Veneer (Sel. B)

  • The selection B. Ledge Veneer is our common grade Ledge Veneer. Masons frequently combine selection A and B to mimic the look of a dry stacked wall. This is also the more economical choice and works well in smaller spaces.

  • These pieces can range in size from 1.5 inches tall to 4 inches tall. Their lengths will range from around 6 inches up to 24 inches.

  • For most projects we have the selection B. in stock and available. For larger projects it is best to put an order in to ensure we have the quantity required.

It is important to note that manufactured corners always have at least one dark gray face, and often have two. These should not solely make up your corners. Full-Bed Snapped Veneer

  • Full-bed Snapped veneer is an excellent option for your natural stone veneer project. It is used regularly to veneer fireplaces, columns, and walls. The snapped edges are a crisp dark gray color and the tight straight lines make for an exceptional natural stone veneer. We sell this veneer by the ton and each pallet weighs one ton. For one pallet of 4 inch veneer you can expect to get between 30 and 40 face feet of coverage.

  • We snap our veneer into 4 inch and 6 inch bed depths, but we can snap to 8 and 10 inch bed depths upon request. Each piece is snapped out of pieces of flagging and have that same thickness range of 2 to 5 inches. Lengths can vary from around 12 inches to nearly 4 feet.

  • 4 inch and 6 inch veneer is typically readily available and on hand. Availability can be affected by time of year and the size of your order. For orders greater than 5 tons it is highly recommended you place your order a few weeks in advance of your project.

  • Please keep in mind that for external installations it is highly recommended that you treat the stone with a sealer to avoid any chance of rust running from contact with the mortar. Some high quality mortars can also effectively mitigate this risk. The rusting is typically a result of the iron pyrite that naturally occurs in the stone reacting with the chemicals in the mortar.

Snapped Cap

  • We are able to produce a wide range of snapped cap for a variety of projects. Snapped cap is an excellent option for sitting walls or walls with a more formal and finished look. Snapped cap is derived from flagging, and therefore has the same coloration and thicknesses as the flagging.

  • Lengths of snapped flagging are random but typically range between 2 and 4 feet. The width of the cap can be any measurement up to 42 inches. We frequently make 18, 22, and 24 inch cap. Thicknesses will vary between 2 and 4 inches.

  • Snapped cap can be one of the more manufacturing intensive products we sell, and is sourced from our flagging inventory, which is our highest demand product. Lead times can be a month or more depending on the quantity ordered. It is highly recommended that ,if at all possible, you place your cap order as soon as the job is confirmed and not wait until the wall is built. Additionally, it is recommended that masons cap the wall as they build it so that they can account for the differences in thicknesses.

Pellegrini Wire Saw

Last season we added the first wire saw to our operations, a Pellegrini DF2000 monowire saw.  With this addition we are now able to cut full tread Goshen steps and 2” gauged flagging.  The steps will keep the live face that makes them pop in any application, and both options will feature a bush hammered finish.  Along with our Goshen schist flagging, in the 2024 season we will be introducing a new product line to market, Cypress Grove flagging.  This locally sourced stone features a green colorway, with winding quartz veins throughout, and will be gauged to 2” as well.

SRG “Driveway Mix”

  • SRG “Schist Rock Gravel”, also known as driveway mix, is a crushed stone product that can be used for driveway applications as well as a wide range of additional land preparation applications.

  • Our SRG is crushed into 1-1/2 inch pieces and smaller. This makes for nice sturdy base that compacts very well.

  • We crush regularly and usually can make delivery in a few days to a week. The main constraint is the availability of trucking. Also, at times we can run out of SRG due to especially high demand. The early spring when most people are re-doing their driveways is when we can run into this issue.

3/4” “Crushed Stone”

  • Our 3/4 inch crushed stone is often referred to as “Stone Mulch” and is typically used as a decorative stone, but is also frequently used in smaller drainage applications.

  • As the name implies. . . this crushed stone product is screened into 3/4 inch stone with no fines.

  • Much like the SRG this product has a relatively short lead time with occasional shortages that result in prolonged lead times.

Loam

  • This is not your premium top notch loam. The soil is going to be more mineral rich and organics poor and we recommend you combine it with manure or compost to get the optimal composition for growing new vegetation.

  • We almost always have at least a pile available. If you need a large quantity we may need some additional time to screen additional material to fill the order.

Fill

  • This is your run of the mill boney soil with large and small stone. It is a cheap way to fill a big hole with a relatively stable composition.

  • Our fill can contain stones up to 2 feet in diameter and occasionally bigger. So it is not optimal for shallow applications. Most customers will cap their project with some SRG or Loam to make for a nice flat services.

  • Pretty much never an issue getting fill, especially if you have access to your own trucking.

Delivery Options

  • SSQ Delivery

We run our own tandem axle dump truck. We use the truck to deliver the majority of our flagging orders. We can get up to 600 SF of flagging into the back of the truck. We also send loads of Wall Stone and Aggregate up to 15 tons.

  • Third Party Flatbed

Flatbed trucks are an excellent option for transporting large quantities of palletized material (up to 16 pallets) or flat stock like flagging or steps. Quantities of flagging or steps can vary widely based on thickness, so keep that in mind. Typically these trucks need to be unloaded by a forklift, but we do also have access to an option that includes a moffett (attached forklift).

  • Triaxle

Triaxle deliveries maximize cost effectiveness, availability, and volume. This is the go-to option for deliveries of orders of 18 - 24 tons. Wall Stone and Aggregates are typically shipped using this method. We typically try to schedule the triaxle loads on Thursdays to keep a regular schedule for Canepari’s Landscaping.

  • Roll Off Container

We use JJ and Son as a third party delivery option. This is a great option for orders up to 8 tons. It is also great for mid sized deliveries where damage is a concern. This method is almost as delicate as unloading with a forklift.

FAQ’s

  • It is important to keep in mind that this is a natural stone product and in order to maintain it’s beautiful natural appearance we need to split it and snap it at natural lines. This means that for many of our various categories of stone mother nature dictates one or more of the dimensions. We will do our best to keep material within specifications, but expect outliers that will require some additional work.

  • Both our snapped veneer and thin-stone veneer are designed to be used with mortar. With interior applications mortar can be applied like with any other stone. For exterior applications it is best practice to apply a sealer or water repelant to avoid any chance of rust bleeding. Also, some higher end mortars have chemical compositions to help mitigate oxidation and runoff.

  • Well, the Goshen Schist formation is typically broken down into 3 units, with 1 being the softest and 3 being the hardest. Sugarledge typically quarries unit 2. The hardness of the stone brings pros and cons. The softer the stone the easier it is to work and shape with a hammer, which allows masons to hammer the stone into different shapes. The trade-off is the softer stone can be difficult to split or snap and seems to deteriorate faster. The harder stones are slightly more difficult to hammer, but they snap and split more easily and can still be easily shaped with a masonry blade.

  • No special tools are required to work with this stone. It can be worked with your typical array of masonry tools. For building stone walls you pretty much only need a hammer and chisel to make it happen.

  • First, you should never take your schist for granite. . . Okay, pun aside, Schist is a geological formation of stone like Granite, Marble, Slate, Soapstone, or limestone. It is a sedimentary stone that has undergone the metamorphic process hundreds of millions of years ago. It is not as hard or homogenous as Granite, but it is harder than slate, soapstone, and most marbles. Which means it is perfectly suited for most any application interior or exterior.
